Background

MCA understands the challenges involved in preserving historic buildings. Over the past 60 years, MCA has been involved with a number of historic preservation projects in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. Either as the Architect of Record or as a specialty consultant on a design team, we have extensive experience coordinating with architects, engineers, conservators, and other specialty consultants to deliver a project that meets the Client’s needs while improving building performance and being sensitive to historic fabric. We are familiar with a wide range of archaic building materials, including brick; terra-cotta; natural building stones; slate, metal, and clay tile roofing; and metals such as copper and galvanized sheet metal.

Services

As part of the rehabilitation of historic resources, MCA performs facade and window assessments for historic properties, develops material specifications and details specific to the existing conditions, and performs construction contract administration and field observation. We often utilize contemporary products and knowledge to solve the problems facing historic buildings and use this expertise to extend the service life of building components. We are sympathetic to our Clients’ needs to maintain a budget, continue use, and keep a building comfortable for its users.

Expertise

Several MCA staff members meet or exceed the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards for Architectural History, Architecture, and Historic Architecture. This allows us to navigate often complicated local, state, and Federal requirements for historic preservation projects with a high level of confidence and expertise. MCA works within established standards and guiding documents, including the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Historic Properties, the California Historic Building Code, and local planning codes and ordinances. Our historic preservation work has been recognized by the State of California, the American Institute of Architects (AIA), and the California Preservation Foundation (CPF).
