The Walt Disney Family Museum is located in the Presidio of San Francisco and inhabits two buildings originally part of the iconic 19th century Montgomery Street barracks that define the western edge of the Main Parade Ground in the Presidio. With their imposing size, symmetrical form, and restrained architectural detailing, the 44,000 square foot barracks are icons for the Historic Post. Originally constructed in 1897, these buildings operated as an active Army base and the Pacific coast’s defense until 1994.
The structures are clad primarily in brick masonry and sandstone foundation walls. Both structures are constructed over existing, partially below grade basement levels. A new sub-basement mechanical level was proposed below the existing basement of Building 104. Double-hung wood windows provide protection at punched openings in the exterior walls of both buildings. Operable clerestory windows occur over the Gallery space of Building 122. Both structures are roofed with asphalt shingles. A covered entry porch spans the full length of the east elevation of Building 104.
MCA was hired to perform construction administration services for the Museum. Though, it did prove challenging due to the sensitivity of the archived materials in the rooms above. MCA provided waterproofing design for the below-grade waterproofing including existing and new masonry walls, new elevator pit, and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing penetrations details.
MCA provided Peer Review and Construction Document services for the below-grade waterproofing systems, interior wet spaces and all exterior horizontal assemblies, including at-grade podium, terrace decks, and roofing systems. Peer review of the building’s cladding systems was also performed, as well as shop drawing and submittal review and site visits to observe ongoing construction.
